A mosque that published over 400 sermon videos promoting violent and extremist rhetoric on social media received $45 million in tax dollars.

The Forum publishes three years of prayers for killing from the Islamic Center of Detroit, and federal spending records list the mosque as the recipient of about $45 million since 2017, $31 million of it in a single Agriculture Department entry.  The article reports in part:

Sam Westrop, the head of the Forum’s Islamist Watch, published on Tuesday the Forum’s review of sermons, lectures and prayers at the Islamic Center of Detroit, the mosque on Tireman Avenue: more than 400 examples of violent or extremist speech from video the mosque itself posted over three years, 44 of them in one reel (Focus on Western Islamism). The prayer leaders ask God to “eradicate them from existence,” to “orphan their children as they orphaned ours, and demolish their homes as they demolished ours,” and to “destroy the state of the Zionists, O Allah, destroy them utterly”; one asks for “victory to our mujahideen brothers stationed in Gaza.” Other speakers voice support for convicted terrorists and praise jihad.

Federal spending records list the Islamic Center of Detroit as the recipient of about $45 million in pass-through grants since 2017, almost all of it Agriculture Department child-nutrition money routed through the Michigan Department of Education. The largest entry is a single subaward of $31,006,670 dated December 2, 2021, under the state’s National School Lunch Program grant, the largest of the 1,492 on that grant (USAspending.gov). Health and Human Services refugee money reached the center through the state’s labor department in two $500,000 entries, dated October 1, 2024, and October 1, 2025 (USAspending.gov). The mosque says on its website that it has served more than 150,000 meals a week at 13 sites since the pandemic began (ICD); the entry does not say which program the money paid for, and the Forum has filed Freedom of Information Act requests to find out.

Karen Whitsett, a Democratic state representative from Detroit, asked the legislature for $7.5 million for the center in the 2026 state budget (Michigan Capitol Confidential). The center has filed no federal nonprofit return since 2003; the IRS designates it a religious institution, a category exempt from filing (ProPublica). The Forum’s text names no speaker; the Washington Free Beacon has named the head imam, Imran Salha, who told a rally days after Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack that Muslims have a “fire in our hearts that will burn that state until its demise” (Washington Free Beacon). Neither the mosque nor the agencies had answered in public by this afternoon.

Grok reports the following regarding the HHS funds in 2025:

2025 (and into ongoing/related 2024 obligations), primarily as $500,000 sub-grants via the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) for refugee job placement services.

According to a Middle East Forum analysis of federal grants data and public records (in their July 2026 report on HHS funding to certain organizations):

*    ICD received a $40,000 allocation from HHS in 2022 for mosque renovations.

*   It was obligated a pair of $500,000 sub-grants from Michigan’s Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity in 2024 and 2025 specifically “to provide job placement services to refugees.”

These Michigan LEO grants align with federal HHS Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) funding that states administer for refugee social services, employment, ESL, and related support. A separate MEF report from October 2026 noted that under the second Trump administration, HHS gave ICD an additional $500,000 (consistent with the 2025 obligation).

It appears that $500,000 in HHS funds were distributed to the Islamic Center of Detroit in October 2025 under the Trump administration based on policy obligation.

Imams and mosques that promote violence, jihad and death to non-Muslims should not receive a penny from taxpayers whether it is state or federal funds.
