Department of Homeland Security funding bill passes both chambers. The U.S. Senate voted 52-47 on June 5, 2026 to pass a $70 billion budget reconciliation package funding Department of Homeland Security (DHS) immigration agencies, including ICE and Border Patrol. The vote fell nearly along party lines with all Democrats opposing the bill and one Republican (Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska) joining them.
The US House voted 214-212 along party lines on June 9, 2026 to approve the DHS reconciliation bill and send it to President Trump’s desk for signing.
Florida Family Association launched numerous email alerts that resulted in GOP US Senators receiving thousands of emails that urged them to use the reconciliation process to fully fund DHS. Funding the Department of Homeland Security is a basic congressional responsibility to protect Americans from domestic terror and crime. It should have been approved by all senators and representatives when the whole budget was approved. However, after it was separated from the main budget Democrats voted against it to appease their violent, anti-American, God hating extreme constituents. That is why Florida Family Association sent out numerous email alerts urging people to send emails to encourage all GOP US Senators to support DHS funding through a reconciliation bill.
The SAVE America Act amendment to the reconciliation bill for DHS funding failed by a 48-50 vote in the US Senate. Mitch McConnell, Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, and Thom Tillis voted No while Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) did not vote. While this is definitely a loss, passage of the SAVE America Act is NOT over.
Here is how that Republican US Senate 48 vote could be 51 votes early next year for the SAVE America Act and abolish the filibuster.
• ONE MORE POSSIBLE VOTE. Mitch McConnell is retiring. Andy Barr, President Trump’s pick, is running to replace US Senator McConnell in Kentucky. Barr is running against Democrat Charles Booker who lost to Ron Paul 38.2% to 61.8% in 2022.
• TWO MORE POSSIBLE VOTES. Joni Ernst is retiring from the US Senate. Ashley Hinson, President Trump’s pick, is running to replace US Senator Ernst in Iowa. While polls show this election is close it has been 18 years since a Democrat won a US Senate race in Iowa.
• THREE MORE POSSIBLE VOTES. Thom Tillis is retiring from the US Senate. Michael Whatley, President Trump’s pick, is running to replace US Senator Whatley. Roy Cooper, former North Carolina Democrat Governor (2017-2025) is posing a tough race against Whatley.
• THREE MORE POSSIBLE VOTES. Why is this the second THREE MORE POSSIBLE VOTES? Because if only one of the above three GOP candidates lose on November 3, 2026 the vote would be tied at 50-50 assuming that Murkowski and Collins vote NO again. That would mean that Vice President JD Vance could cast the tie breaking vote in favor of the SAVE America Act.
• FOURTH POTENTIAL VOTE. US Senator John Fetterman said he does not support the SAVE America Act because it prohibits mail in ballots. The SAVE America Act does not currently contain any specific text that outright prohibits or bans mail-in/absentee ballots. This is a provision that the White House would like added. This could be an area for the GOP to pick up another vote by working with Senator Fetterman.
And of course Republicans must maintain majority control of the House of Representatives during this year’s elections in order to pass the SAVE America Act.
Florida Family Association stands ready to make calls to action on several approaches to passing the SAVE America Act in early 2027 if the November 3, 2026 election results provide that opportunity.
